Periodical Eye Examinations
Preventative eye care is not the only reason to obligate a yearly eye examination. It is the choice of your eye doctors to determine which vision tests are needed for you. Many adult eye examinations include several different small tests that help in monitoring your eye health while observing for potential eye diseases.
Eye examinations are done both for distant and near vision to identify if anyone requires glasses for the first time. As visual function changes with time, the correctness of vision requires periodical eye checkups.
Doctors also look for other ocular problems in addition to near-sightedness and far-sightedness. Astigmatism is very common, is found very disturbing in daily life. Cylindrical power that is required in astigmatism is also identified during such checkups (refraction). Regular eye checkups can prevent 70% of blindness as it is not only looking for visual changes but also looking for other causes of visual impairment as eye examinations have so much to offer.
Many of the fully developed ocular symptoms and conditions are irreversible or very difficult to cure if it is not detected at an earlier stage. In regular complete eye checkups a thorough examination of the lens conditions, retina, and optic nerve are done regularly.
Cataract causing blurred vision due to opaque lens requires timely identification and need surgery with an intraocular lens implant to restore normal vision, which is a good side of a periodical eye checkup.
Not only cataracts, but regular eye checkups can also detect early retinal diseases in patients having a general health condition like Hypertension, Diabetes, ocular trauma, etc. Macular edema, retinal detachment can lead to complete blindness, if not treated appropriately in time. Regular eye examinations can detect any such development.
A complete eye checkup can identify other eye conditions like strabismus (misaligned or crossed eyes), amblyopia (inconsistent processing of images by brain received from both the eyes), and age-related macular degeneration.
Recommended Frequency of Eye Check-Ups
Depending on the visual demand in the job, the person is advised to go for more frequent eye checkups than once a year.
